present:

TALK SHOW DEMOCRACY: The Funny Part

“Simpsons” writer and producer Tom Gammill, New Yorker magazine cartoon editor Bob Mankoff and political cartoonists Patrick Oliphant and Mike Luckovich join UM’s James W. Cook and College of William and Mary’s John Morreall as they explore humor and its role in shaping the democratic process.

The Knight-Wallace Fellows at Michigan have teamed with the Institute for the Humanities in a series of events to explore TV news, Internet blogs, newspaper editorials and other features of the information media in a series of winter 2009 events called Talk Show Democracy.

A series of six lectures will culminate in two dovetailed half-day conferences. The Institute for the Humanities will host its Friday morning, March 27 in Forum Hall, Palmer Commons, 100 Washtenaw Avenue, Ann Arbor. The Knight-Wallace Fellowship Program will follow suit on Monday afternoon, March 30th with its topic, “Political Humor and its Role in Shaping the Democratic Process,” in the Great Lakes rooms, also at Palmer Commons. Speakers include “Simpsons” writer/producer Tom Gammill, nationally syndicated political cartoonist Patrick Oliphant, New Yorker magazine cartoon editor Bob Mankoff, Atlanta Journal-Constitution editorial cartoonist Mike Luckovich, University of Michigan cultural historian James W. Cook and College of William and Mary professor of religious studies, John Morreall.

Knight-Wallace Fellows director Charles R. Eisendrath will lead the participants in a discussion and demonstration of the power of political humor. Patrick Oliphant will have his charcoal and paper ready for a live demonstration of satirical cartooning.
