University of Michigan Names Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellows

Ann Arbor, MI - The Knight-Wallace Fellows program at the University of Michigan has named 12 American journalists for the academic year 2010-2011. International fellows will be designated in June. The group is the 37th to be offered fellowships by the University of Michigan.

While on leave from regular duties, Knight-Wallace Fellows pursue customized sabbatical studies and attend twice-weekly seminars at Wallace House, a gift from newsman Mike Wallace and his wife Mary.  The program also includes training in narrative writing, multi-platform journalism and entrepreneurial enterprise.  News tours for the KWF group in Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo and Moscow are arranged by host news organizations.

Each Knight-Wallace Fellow receives a stipend of $70,000 for the eight-month academic year.  Funding is entirely from endowment gifts by foundations, news organizations and individuals committed to improving the quality of information reaching the public.

Professor Charles R. Eisendrath, who directs the program, is a former foreign correspondent for Time magazine with broad experience in print, broadcast and online journalism.

Fellows and their study projects are:

William Foreman, South China chief, The Associated Press; The Transformation of North Korea.

Amber Hunt, reporter, Detroit Free Press; Embracing Empathy in Urban Crime Reporting.

Todd Leopold, producer, CNN.com; Increasing the Social Merit of Entertainment News.
